This lovely bluebird weekend I, cellorides, joined the Alternative Tour. This is a small tour and it’s the answer to an overpacked (20.000+ starters) Amstel Gold cyclo. I’ve been riding the Amstel Gold Race Tour last year. Nice to do it once, but way too crowded to join the cyclo again. So the Alternative Tour was a great alternative! This tour had it’s third edition and we were with a small amount of around 800 starters at the start. My pal Franc picked me up in ‘s-Hertogenbosch after my work on Friday. Off to Heerlen! Heerlen was way closer to the start and around 40 minutes away from s’Gravenvoeren in Belgium.
Wake up!!! The alarm said… Even 06:30am was too early for me (us). However we forget about that when we saw how Frans (the father of Franc) made a great breakfast for us. Big thanks to Frans our Soigneur at the start of another to early morning day! We had to go to the start before 09:00am so we had to. We aren’t pro racers, and they cán go to the start around 10:00 or 11:00 for their races.
After picking up our start nr. we where on the roll at 08:45am. It was still pretty cold and there was a breeze. We were warming up by pacing and pedalling hard, and in no time we’re warmed up like biscuits. We had fun by looking around, enjoyed the serene scenery and the hills and climbings we had to conquer. Suddenly my GPS started beeping, and we were pulled out of our serene movie scenery. My GPS was telling us that we where off course…? Off course huh? We still saw arrows! And bloop! Suddenly we where beamed up to the start again. Somewhere we took a wrong turn and rode back to the start, damn… However, my GPS didn’t tell us, because we were on our way back, and still on course.
Hehehe, Beavis & Butthead on tour! We came here for the 160 km tour, so we shifted quickly and started all over again. Yeah, we skipped one climb, but we did 3 climbs all over again. We didn’t care, because we had a good time. In no time we were back in our movie and on the road. The Alternative Tour appeared to be an awesome route. We enjoyed it so much, especially because most of the kilometres it was just the two of us. Such a contrast with the Amstel Gold Race with its 25.000 participants.
The next day we watched the profi’s racing the Amstel Gold Race. We took some nice pictures, if I may say so. But next year we’re joining the Alternative Tour again. See you!
